Speech and Debate team members hold their medals earned at the Wylie tournament in November 2015.

The TCHS Speech and Debate team brought home big successes on Jan. 15 and 16 at a TFA meet located at Denton Guyer high school.

Students contended for best speaker or debater against 42 strong schools of talented students, and each category averaged around 50-6o entries per event, making it a more competitive tournament. With great effort, many students were able to advance and earn awards.

Among the successful students was Emily Gogle, a senior, who placed fourth in Impromptu Speaking. Emily McIntosh was ranked fifth in Poetry, and Rylee Jones placed eighth in Prose, a particularly competitive category this tournament. Jacob Tate was a semi-finalist in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking, giving long speeches on challenging topics regarding current events. Austin Leath, a senior, placed 3rd in Impromptu Speaking, and was a semi-finalist in Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking, bringing home multiple awards for Timber Creek.

“It was a hard competition and I’m very thankful for the opportunity to compete against such great people,” Gogle said.

The team looks forward to more prolific tournaments and rewarding experiences in the coming debate season.
