CTE Week: Health Science, Finance, Architecture and Construction

Quick Fact about CTE:  Experts predict 47 million job openings by 2018. About one-third will require an associate’s degree or certificate, and nearly all will require real-world skills that can be mastered through CTE.

Here is a tidbit about Health Sciences.  More than 460 Hospitals are licensed in Texas.  More than 950 heart transplants have been performed at one of Houston’s largest transplant centers.  In Texas, 6,877 physicians specialize in internal medicine, the most popular specialty among the state’s medical doctors.  In 2009, there were 62,233 Licensed physicians in Texas.

Today, we recognize our Health Science, Finance and Architecture and Construction teachers.  Here is some information about these Pathways.

HEALTH SCIENCE: The Principles of Health Science provides an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development systems of the health care industry.

(2) To pursue a career in the health science industry, students should learn to reason, think critically, make decisions, solve problems, and communicate effectively. Students should recognize that quality health care depends on the ability to work well with others.

(3) The health science industry is comprised of diagnostic, therapeutic, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development systems that function individually and collaboratively to provide comprehensive health care. Students should identify the employment opportunities, technology, and safety requirements of each system. Students are expected to apply the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a health science career through further education and employment.

(4) Professional integrity in the health science industry is dependent on acceptance of ethical and legal responsibilities. Students are expected to employ their ethical and legal responsibilities and limitations and understand the implications of their actions

FINANCE: Students will investigate global economics with emphasis on the free enterprise system and its impact on consumers and businesses. Students apply critical-thinking skills to analyze financial options based on current and projected economic factors. Students will gain knowledge and skills necessary to set long-term financial goals based on those options. Students will determine methods of achieving long-term financial goals through investment, tax planning, asset allocation, risk management, retirement planning, and estate planning.

ARCHITECTURE AND CONSTRUCTION: Principles of Architecture and Construction provides an overview to the various fields of architecture, interior design, construction science, and construction technology. Achieving proficiency in decision making and problem solving is an essential skill for career planning and lifelong learning. Students use self-knowledge, educational, and career information to set and achieve realistic career and educational goals. Job-specific, skilled training can be provided through the use of training modules to identify career goals in trade and industry areas. Safety and career opportunities are included, in addition to work ethics and job-related study in the classroom such as communications; problem solving and critical thinking; Information Technology Applications; systems; safety, health, and environmental; leadership and teamwork; ethics and legal responsibilities; employability and career development; technical skills; introduction to hand tools; introduction to power tools; basic rigging; and reading technical drawings.
