One part of the District of Innovation, DOI, plan is the Campus Behavior Coordinator. The current CBC is “primarily responsible for maintaining student discipline and the implementation of education Code Chapter 37”, which means that the Campus Behavior Coordinator is responsible for any student’s behavior on campus or and at any school-related events. There is one individual at every school responsible for the behavior of the students and notifying parents of behavioral incidents. The DOI plan would remove the individual Campus Behavior Coordinator at each campus and allow campuses to have teams available to manage their behavior.
“[The committee] modified the law a little bit to say that, you can delegate components [of the Campus Behavior Coordinator] because that was part of the discussion in our committee meeting was so then if they allow you to delegate some of the responsibilities out then why change it,” commented Cecil McDaniel, Chief of Schools in Keller ISD. “The response was just to remove that whole piece out of the way so we can do business like we need to and that is whoever is the assistant principal who works with that group of students will be the person that the parent would deal with.”
At Timber Creek, for example, students are assigned an Assistant Principal based on alphabetical listing. With removing the current Campus Behavior Coordinator, that gives campuses the ability to have assistant principals work together on behavioral issues rather than delegating one person to do all of the work. This means that when there is a behavioral issue on campus, there might not only be one person contacting parents but multiple people.
