Interact Club Plans “Miracle Minute” to Help Shelter Disaster Victims

Interact Club is holding a ShelterBox fundraiser for the month of March. In order to provide shelter, tools and other necessities to people who have lost everything in a natural disaster or humanitarian crisis; 2A classes on Thursday, March 9 will be collecting money for a “miracle minute” in paper bags to donate to the ShelterBox funds.

“ShetlerBox means a lot to me because it’s a lot about helping people in need that we can’t even imagine some of the things these families go through. Natural disasters or humanitarian crisis, these people lose absolutely everything except the clothes on their back,” said Melissa West, sponsor for the Interact Club. “So Shelter Box works internationally and helps people get back on their feet and they provide a really durable tent, pots and pans, and they even provide coloring books for kids and so it’s important to me because I think it’s vital we reach out to other countries in need.”

In the previous 2016-17 school year Timber Creek was able to purchase one ShelterBox which could “help out about a dozen families”, according to West, with their close to $1,700 donation. The Shelter Box fundraiser is a project among all Keller ISD high schools.

“Each Shelter Box cost about $1,000 so all the Keller high schools got in together, and we all pooled in our money and in total we were able to buy six Shelter Box’s, which is really awesome,” said West. West is hopeful to raise even more money this year.

With partnership from the Keller Rotary club the hope is to have the Shelter Box tent on display in the cafeteria Wednesday March 8.

The 2A class period with the most money will receive a donut party. Coach Judd’s 2A class donated the most money with $105 and won last year.

Shelterbox has had a significant presence in Haiti, Syria, Indonesia, and the United States. A link to their website is listed here: http://www.shelterboxusa.org/
