With no hesitation, only pure determination, the Timber Creek Rugby Team shines light on the talented athletes of the nontraditional school sport.
The Timber Creek rugby team is swiftly moving their way up in their division as they have recently ranked seventh in State. Being a first-year team, earning a spot in the Division Two category, and having already defeated Division One opponents, the students are breaking records in Texas Rugby history.
The TC rugby team is composed of athletes from four different high schools, and had coined the team name after the school a majority of the students attend. As expected, the players, or ruggers, are highly skilled in the sport. Colleges are scouting a number of the ruggers to play for their respective teams, furthermore, some have already pledged to be a member of specific school rugby teams this upcoming fall.
Senior, Chloe Appling-Hege, the team’s administrative assistant, disclosed multiple students who are being looked at for collegiate level rugby. “[They] are all on a selection committee for the Texas High Performance Rugby – which is a select team process that leads to All – American.”
Appling-Hege described their regular season schedule, including those they consider adversaries. “We compete against teams all over the state. We have played private schools, public schools and clubs similar to us.”
Jackson Kromer, Central High School senior and TC Rugby member, details the continuous impact sports has on his life. “Rugby’s a brotherhood like no other,” Kromer explains. “The people you meet and play with become your family more so than any other sport; that’s something I’ve always loved about this game and the community. It’s like a huge extended family.”
An upcoming match, TC Rugby Club versus Lewisville Rugby Club, will take place this Saturday Feb. 25, at 11:00 a.m. at the Keller Youth Association (KYA) complex, field #7.
