Powerlifters Push Team to State Level

On Feb. 25, Emily Daniels and Tanner Oliver, two powerlifters represented Timber Creek at the Regional meet who qualified for State.

In the men’s and women’s state competitions, both Daniels and Oliver placed in the high ranks in their weight class.

Daniels has been doing powerlifting since she was a freshman and this was her third year to advance to State. Daniels placed seventh in her sophomore year and fourth in her junior year. This year was her last year to compete in powerlifting before she graduates.

She broke the state records for squat at 460 pounds and bench at 240 pounds. Overall she became second place State champion in 6A 198 pound class.

She admitted that it was disappointing that she was not the grand champion in her weight class but nevertheless was proud of herself.

“Although I got second in the state and it sucks to not be the state champion,” Daniels tweeted. “All I can do is be happy because at the end of the day, all of my hard work took me to different places and gave me so many opportunities to meet some amazing people.”

As for Oliver, he started powerlifting in his freshman year and he always loved lifting weights.

This was Oliver’s second year to advance to state and he was very proud of himself to make it.

Even though Oliver was sick during the day of the meet and could not particpate in the Abilene State competition, he took first place at the regional meet.

“The regional competition was a pretty difficult meet,” said Oliver. “I won by pushing myself to do weights that I’ve never done before.”

In the regional meet, Oliver successfully squated 575lbs, benched 370lbs and deadlifted a total of 575lbs in his 242lbs weight class.

Even though the season is now over, Timber Creek has made such huge achievements this year and hopes to improve the following year.
