What You Need to Know About the End of the 2016-17 School Year

The end of the 2016-17 school year is June 2, 2017 — but there’s many things to know before the year is over.

First, Timber Creek Principal Donnie Bartlett wants to make sure students know about safety, security and rules that will apply during the last days of school.

“We have accomplished great things, and it is our intention to successfully wrap up the year,” Bartlett wrote in a letter to TCHS families. “As you know, safety and security is one of our most important priorities.  The high school principals have established procedures and expectations specific to the final days of the year.”

Seven key points were detailed in the letter:

  1. All backpacks, athletic bags or duffle bags be left at home beginning May 22. (See more notes on bags below)
  2. KISD Dress Code is still being enforced.
  3. Lockers will not be available for usage after May 22.
  4. Textbooks will be collected prior to May 25.
  5. Extra personnel have been assigned to each campus, including 24-hour security.
  6. Extra security cameras are available on campuses.
  7. Students must leave the building immediately at the 3:45 p.m. bell. There will be limited scheduled activities on campus after 3:45 p.m. after May 22.

UPDATE: We got some more clarification from administration about what bags are or are not allowed — “No backpacks will be allowed; this includes drawstring bags. Purses will be allowed, but purses that are larger and double as backpacks will not be allowed.”

Bartlett also detailed consequences for students that disrupt the school day.

“Students who disrupt the learning environment will be subject to suspension and further disciplinary action per the Keller ISD Student Code of Conduct,” the letter said. “Seniors who involve themselves in such disruptions will also be suspended from walking in the graduation ceremony, according to Policy FMH Local.  For students who are not seniors, involvement in disruption of the learning environment is punishable up to and including DAEP placement for 60 days to include next school year.”

Finals Schedule

The Keller ISD board voted on Tuesday, May 16 to adjust the end of the 2017-18 school year and make both June 1 and 2 into early release days for high schools.

The adjusted finals schedule (seen below) removes some of the class periods that were originally scheduled in between finals on June 1.

See the adjusted KISD calendar here.

When Summer Comes…

Just as a heads up, Timber Creek Talon goes on break from June 2 through August 7, 2017, aside for rare updates. We will, however, be at Fish Camp on Aug. 3, both to answer questions and present some cool stuff.

And not to drain your enthusiasm before Summer even begins, but the 2017-18 School Year starts earlier than before, with Aug. 15, 2017 as the start of the next year.
