On Saturday, Oct. 28, the Timber Creek Band traveled to Coppell to compete at the 2017 USBands Coppell Showcase. This contest was a “one-and-done” contest, meaning instead of competing in both prelims and finals, each band only performs once; scores are calculated based on that one performance.
The band arrived at Timber Creek at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday for a quick hour and a half rehearsal. As they left the school, dozens of band parents lined up outside with signs and streamers to send them off.
“I love having an amazing support system that is right there with us at every competition,” said saxophone player Brandon Anguiano. “It means so much when they chant in the stands and help with all the little things like water and props at every competition.”
Upon arrival to the stadium, the band stood outside their busses in sections, everyone with their arms around each other talking through their show and giving each other words of encouragement. This served as a moment for the band to calm any nerves and be prepared to perform to the best of their abilities.
“I think the section circle made for a better warm up and ultimately became a cool bonding moment for our section,” said flute player Jordan Cuddeford. “I’m so glad we did it because it gave us all a chance to come together as a family and go through our show.”
Following the performance, the band walked back to the busses to change into half uniform and prepare to go and hear results. The drum majors stood on the field while the band sat in the stands anxiously awaiting the announcement of who would take home the first place trophy. After much anticipation, it was finally announced that Timber Creek had won with a score of 92.3375, winning caption awards for best music, best visual and best overall effect.
“Standing at retreat when I heard the second place band announced, a smile immediately washed over my face as I realized we had won,” said Drum Major Lauren Mrachek. “When they finally announced our name, I immediately heard the rest of the band behind me as we did our salute and received our awards.”
