Golden Determination: Seniors Kick Off Football Season With Hopes High

Starting their season off earlier than ever, for the second year in a row the Timber Creek football team looks to further their progress after seeing the program’s positive results within the previous three seasons.

With a shortened break and the anticipations of the upcoming year, players have been training throughout the summer, developing skill while building upon the set fundamentals of the team. Having high attendance rates at the strength and conditioning camps, as well as voluntary workouts, athletes like senior Dave Casillas don’t view the shortened break as a hindrance, but rather a small obstacle to overcome.

“This summer has been the hardest we’ve worked in the history of our program,” said Casillas. “Since we have been projected to be last in our district, we’ve gladly taken the underdog title and are ready to surprise a lot of people in the state of Texas.”

With their first game of this year against Rockwall Heath High School on August 30, the team hopes to see even more progress as they enter the new football season. Feeling as though the team has truly come together within the past summer and pushed each other to be the best, teammate and senior Blake Irving has learned to put his faith in the process, while also maintaining an aspect of fun.

“There has been a big emphasis on us seniors to lead and step up and become the backbone of the team,” Irving commented. “Once we all begin to have fun then that’s when all the success happens.”

Training both in their off time as well as throughout the season, the team as a whole sets the standards for their season, setting goals that they can achieve. Spending their weekends during school usually in preparation for the next week, the coaches look to continue tweaking the program in minor ways in order to further their athletes strengths and potential. Pitted as what Casillas describes as “the underdog”, these student-athletes like Irving expect the team to set the tone early during their game against Heath.

“I expect seniors to come up against Rockwall and set the tone early to…start the season off right with a big win,” Irving said. ”[Hopefully leading towards] winning district, making it to the playoffs, and winning another Golden Football.”
