The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 34,000 Commended Scholars including 30 students from Keller ISD and an exemplary four students from Timber Creek. Students selected received Letters of Commendation in recognition of outstanding academic promise.
“I was really surprised to get commended,” recipient Katelin Tran explained. “The National Merit Scholar Award has always seemed unattainable to me so I was really happy that I got so close”.
While these students are not continuing in the the National Merit competition, their excellence has placed them at the forefront of recipients for scholarships from other businesses and organizations. Students entered the National Merit program by taking the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test (PSAT) their junior year and by fulfilling program entry requirements.
“I was surprised but excited,” said Emma Shields. “It’s an honor to be recognized”.
Additionally, seven students were named National Hispanic Recognition Scholars by the College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP). The NHRP identifies students that are academically well-prepared, of Hispanic/Latino descent and have taken the PSAT. This recognition does not award a scholarship as well but is considered a prestigious honor that helps colleges and universities identify academically exceptional Hispanic students.

Students received recognition at the latest Keller ISD board meeting and were given their official certificates. Certificates emphasized that out of the 1.6 million students which entered into the National Merit program they were among the elite few that received commendation.
