In the time that Head Girls Soccer Coach, Michael King, has created the Rex King Memorial Soccer Tournament, a tournament in honor of the late Rex King, he has been able to acquire $72,020 in donations for the Community Hospice of Texas.
On National Philanthropy day, Nov. 15, Coach King and his sister were presented with the National Philanthropy Award.
“The Hospice nominated my sister and I for the award,” Coach King said. “They have the option to nominate one family from North Texas each year.”
The tournament sports many different opportunities for donations. These include a raffle drawing, silent auction, concessions available during games, T-shirts sales, and multiple fundraisers. Last year, multiple companies such as the Granger company, and Mobile Home sales donated $5,000, and $1,000 dollars respectively. Other companies also donated money as well.
As for a attendance turnout, Coach King is hoping this year will be the tournament’s biggest yet. The tournament begins on Thursday, Jan. 9, and this will be the seventh annual tournament.
“It really depends on the weather, since we’re hosting the tournament in January.” Coach King said. “But I’m hoping a lot of students and parents will show. It would really be a huge help.”
