This past weekend, the Indoor Drumline started their season off receiving first place with their show entitled “Club Duæl”. The group performed in Lewisville, TX at North Texas Colorguard Association or NTCA, competing against 2 other schools and finishing with a 75.15, a four point lead from second place.
The group performed about three minutes of their six minute show and is hoping to get as much of it on the field before the next competition. Drumline Captain, Maddison Rudd, explains what the first place finish means for the rest of their show.
“Hearing the excitement from the crowd with just three minutes of our show has everyone motivated to work harder so that we can give the best final product for the end of the season,” described Rudd. “There is still a lot of the show to add which will make the audience love our show even more when it is fully finished.”
The drumline is in the class Scholastic Open, which is the second highest class at NTCA and WGI competitions. Last year, the group was almost promoted to the next highest class called Scholastic World, but the judges ultimately decided to keep them in open. This year with such a lead at their first competition, there’s a chance they could get moved up this season.
“In the long run, this first performance will be something to laugh at later, but as of now, I see how great our potential is,” explained Senior snare drum player, Logan Knight. “If we keep up the momentum we might even be bumped up to world class before the end of the year.”
Even with only three minutes, the group finished with their highest score they’ve ever received to start a season and is hoping to keep breaking their own records this season. Freshman vibraphone player Sofia Aguilera explains how this win will get her through the rest of the rehearsals.
“Starting off on a great note really gives us the confidence and excitement for the upcoming events. It gives me that extra push during rehearsals to make each rep my very best,” explains Aguilera. “Even though practices can be long and tiring, it makes it all worth it when you are performing.”
The Indoor Drumline’s next competition will be WGI Dallas on February 22, at Burleson Centennial High School, where they hope to do even better at this competition.
“This is by far my favorite show I’ve been a part of because it is so unique,” describes Rudd. “We have so many seniors this year so this show means everything to us.”
