Pioneer Film Director, John Singleton Dies At 51

On April 29, iconic director, John Singleton passed away at the age of 51 following a massive stroke. Singleton will forever be remembered as a great filmmaker and as a pioneer that broke down barriers for future black directors.

Sri Lankan Churches Bombed on Easter Sunday

On Sunday, April 21, a series of Christian churches and luxury hotels were bombed in the South Asian island of Sri Lanka. The bombings took the lives of over 350 people, injuring more than 500 bystanders, including 39 foreigners.

Philanthropic Musician Nipsey Hussle Killed At 33

On Sunday, March 31, rapper Nipsey Hussle was shot and killed in front of one of his Marathon Clothing stores in South Los Angeles. The musician was well known for his humanitarian efforts in South Central neighborhoods and the youth.

Sophia’s Corner Black History Month Special: Misty Copeland

Misty Copeland is a ballet dancer at the American Ballet theatre in New york City, who recently became the company’s first African-American woman to be promoted to principal dancer in its 75 year history. She also became the American Ballet Theatre’s first African-American soloist in two decades, and has inspired many young girls and boys in her important work.
